The part is easy to copy; the box, the identifiers and the data behind them are not. On any given outside door handle, you and your competitor are probably holding products with very similar specifications. What is not similar is whether the part number on the box is right, whether the OEM cross-reference is complete, whether the barcode actually scans, and whether the lot code can be traced back to a production run. The part itself is easy to copy. Presentation, data quality and traceability are not. Get the packaging and the identifiers right first, then decide whether to put your own brand on it.

Why packaging is the cheapest durable differentiation

Because the investment happens once and the return repeats on every carton. You redesign the box once, cut the tooling once, build the part-number and barcode data once — and after that, every piece you ship carries the difference with it. An advantage bought with a price cut disappears at the next quotation. More importantly, packaging differentiation does not require you to own a factory. Without investing in a single mould, you can build an impression on a distributor's shelf and in a workshop's parts rack that your goods are easy to find, easy to recognise and easy to match to a vehicle.

The part converges; the presentation does not

The specification differences between most aftermarket exterior parts are far smaller than buyers imagine. For the same vehicle, handles from several Taiwanese or Southeast Asian suppliers usually land in a similar range on dimensions, material and surface finish. What actually separates one supplier from another is whether the part-numbering system is consistent, whether the application data is written clearly, whether the packaging survives a long ocean journey intact, and whether a return can be traced back to a specific batch. All of those belong to presentation and data — not to the part itself.

The three positions a trader can take

There are only three. Unbranded or neutral packaging, with no brand on it at all. Private label, where your brand goes onto a supplier's existing product. And own-brand with controlled specification, where you decide the material, tolerances, inspection regime and packaging, and the supplier builds to your document. These are not better and worse; they are three settings on a dial marked cost, control and commitment. Most traders do not choose the wrong setting — they want the authority of the third setting while paying only the price of the first.

Position one: neutral packaging

Neutral packaging gives you maximum flexibility and minimum commitment. You can change suppliers at any time, adjust the range at any time, and you carry no plate charges, no obsolete packaging, and no scrapped boxes when a part number changes. The cost is that you leave almost no trace in the channel: the customer remembers the part, or your salesperson, not your company. It suits traders who are still starting out, whose range is not yet stable, or who mainly move goods wholesale from one hand to the next.

Position two: private label

Private label means putting your brand onto a supplier's existing product and packaging. The outlay is usually design work, plate charges and a minimum print run — but what you are buying is brand ownership, not specification control. One thing has to be understood before you start: once your name is on the box, the product sells in the market under your name, which makes you the first line for complaints, warranty and recall. You can pursue the supplier under your contract, but in front of the customer there is nowhere to hide.

Position three: own brand with controlled specification

This is the setting that actually builds a moat. You specify the material, the plating or coating requirement, the torque and durability test conditions, the acceptance criteria and the packaging method; the supplier manufactures to that specification and you hold the right to inspect and audit. The cost is that you must be able to write a specification, read a test report, and carry both a higher minimum order quantity and a longer lead time. The return is that nobody can take your customer with the same part, because it is no longer the same part.

The commitment ladder

Every step up the ladder raises cost and control together — and raises the cost of exit with them. Exit from neutral packaging costs close to nothing. Exit from private label costs you whatever printed packaging is left in the warehouse. Exit from a controlled specification costs you the whole span of specification development, validation and supplier changeover. Before deciding which rung to stand on, ask a plain question: how many years do I intend to run this product line? If the answer is under three, jumping straight to the third rung is usually wrong.

When private label is premature

Private label is premature until you have both repeat demand and a stable supplier. The test is concrete. Has the same group of part numbers been reordered for several consecutive periods? Have returns and complaints fallen to a level you can live with? Can the supplier hold lead times and batch-to-batch quality? Do you hold complete and correct part-number and cross-reference data? If any one of those is still failing, putting your name on the box only converts somebody else's problem into your problem.

When private label starts to pay

It starts to pay when customers begin asking for your version rather than for the part. Three more measurable signals point the same way: the repurchase cycle on the same part number becomes predictable, your after-sales response is already faster than your supplier's, and customers start asking you for cross-reference and application data unprompted. All three mean you are already delivering value beyond the part itself — and that is precisely what a brand can charge for.

What must be on the box

At minimum, seven things: your own part number, the OEM cross-reference, the vehicle application and year range, the quantity inside, the country of origin, a barcode, and a batch or lot code. Every missing field creates cost somewhere downstream. No application data means another round of questions. No barcode means another keying error. No lot code means that when something goes wrong you cannot draw a boundary around it. Every field on the packaging is time saved in advance on some future dispute.

Why the lot code protects you

Because it confines a problem to one batch instead of an entire part number. If the plating or the spring on one production run turns out to be wrong, a lot code lets you notify exactly the customers who received it and replace those few hundred pieces. Without a lot code, you have to answer for the whole part number to every customer who ever bought it, and the difference in cost and reputation is an order of magnitude. The lot code is also your evidence when you go back to the supplier: it ties production date, line and inspection records together.

How to build a lot code that is actually useful

The principle is that it should be reversible without being a puzzle. A common approach is to combine year, week (or day) and a line or order sequence into a fixed-length code, printed on the box and recorded against your shipment data. What matters is not how clever the encoding scheme is, but whether your own system can take a lot code off a returned box and tell you the production date, the purchase order behind it, and which customers received that batch. A lot code you cannot look up is not a lot code.

Barcode basics: GTIN, EAN and UPC

These three terms get used interchangeably, so it is worth separating them. GTIN is the umbrella term for the Global Trade Item Number. EAN-13 and UPC-A are two of the common lengths and presentations in which a GTIN appears. In practice you need to hold on to one rule: each distinct trade item — same part number, same pack configuration — should carry a unique identifier that is never reused for anything else, and that identifier should be generated from a company prefix issued to you. For the detailed allocation rules, work from GS1's own published documentation rather than from what a supplier tells you.

Why you should obtain your own company prefix

Because the prefix says who the goods belong to. A barcode built on your supplier's prefix points, in the global databases, at your supplier — not at you. The moment you change suppliers, or the supplier issues the same number to another customer, your channel data starts to conflict with itself. Some retail and e-commerce channels also reject listings where the brand owner and the prefix holder do not match. Obtaining your own prefix costs far less than renumbering a range and relabelling stock after the fact.

What a barcode does and does not guarantee

A barcode guarantees exactly one thing: that this number maps uniquely to this item inside a system. It does not guarantee quality, it does not guarantee any OEM authorisation, it does not guarantee that the stated vehicle application is correct, and it is not a certification of any kind. Treating a barcode as a quality endorsement is a common misunderstanding — it is an identification tool and nothing more. What actually earns customer trust is whether the data behind that number is correct, kept current, and consistent with what is physically in the box.

Packaging engineering is cost engineering

Every packaging decision eventually turns into one of three kinds of money: material cost, freight cost, and damage claims. Over-packaging spends the money on material and volume. Under-packaging spends it on claims and returns. The right objective is neither maximum protection nor minimum price, but a protection level matched to the actual transport and storage path so that the sum of all three is lowest. That is an engineering question, not a purchasing negotiation.

Match the protection level to the transport mode

A long ocean route with several transhipments through humid tropical ports is a completely different problem from a single direct air shipment. The first demands attention to stacking strength, moisture and sustained vibration; the second cares far more about weight and volume. If your goods will be opened and sold at retail by the customer, you also have to think about how the pack presents on a shelf and how it survives a second round of handling. Draw the real path the goods travel first, then choose materials and structure. The order cannot be reversed.

Dimensions decide packing efficiency

Retail box dimensions are not an aesthetic question; they are a multiplication question. Length, width and height determine how many boxes fit neatly into a master carton and how much void space is wasted. If the dimensions are not aligned to the master carton module, every carton carries a fixed proportion of air for the whole journey — and you pay freight and storage on that air. Packaging should be designed backwards from the master carton to the retail box, not forwards from a box you already made to a carton you then go looking for.

Why a slightly smaller box can pay for its own redesign

Because the saving happens on every carton while the redesign happens once. When the retail box shrinks enough to let the master carton take another layer, or to fit a meaningfully higher count into the same cube, the recovered space converts into a permanent freight and storage saving. The evaluation is straightforward: work out the difference in saleable pieces per unit of cube between the old and new designs, then set that against the design fee, the die-cutting charge, and the residual value of the packaging you already hold.

Multi-language labelling and importing-country requirements

Labelling requirements vary by country and they change over time. Items commonly required include importer or responsible-party details, country of origin, product name and intended use, quantity and specification, and some portion of that information in the local language. Some markets add recycling marks, material identification or specific symbols. Confirm the list for each target market item by item with your importer or local customs broker before you cut a printing plate — never infer one market's requirements from another market's box.

Do not play word games with country of origin

Country of origin is a field both customs and customers examine, and getting it wrong can mean detention, penalties and a terminated customer relationship. The usual grey manoeuvres — printing only the country of design, printing only a company address, or replacing the country name with vague wording — are not accepted in most markets. Mark it according to where the goods are actually manufactured, and write a clause into the purchase contract requiring the supplier to provide supporting documentation.

The first principle of trademarks: rights are territorial

A trademark registered in Taiwan is, as a general rule, protected in Taiwan. If you sell the same brand into the Middle East, Africa or Latin America, the rights in those markets have to be obtained in those markets. This is the lesson many traders learn the expensive way: a name they built up gets registered by somebody else in their main market, and they end up unable to use it themselves. Registration strategy should follow your actual sales map, not the address on your company registration.

Why registering only at home is insufficient

Because infringement and bad-faith filings both happen where the goods are sold. A home registration stops neither the local copier nor the party who understands that many jurisdictions award rights to whoever files first. In the worst case your shipment arrives at port and is detained on the basis that it infringes a locally registered mark held by someone else. The sensible approach is to rank markets by revenue and growth, file in the leading few in that order, and compare the cost of international filing mechanisms against country-by-country filing. Take the actual strategy to a qualified attorney in each target market.

The hard rule: never put an OEM's trademark on your packaging

This is a line with no exceptions. A vehicle manufacturer's logo, brand name and wordmark must not appear on your packaging, because their presence suggests to a buyer that the goods come from that manufacturer or are authorised by it. Using an OEM mark as decoration, as a compatibility hint, or shrunk into a corner does not remove the risk. The only mark on your box that may function as an indication of the origin of the goods is your own brand.

An OEM part number may be listed — but only in the right way

The number itself may be listed as reference information, provided it is clearly presented as a cross-reference and does not imply authorisation or original-equipment manufacture in any way. In practice that means placing OEM numbers under an unambiguous heading such as "Cross Reference", at a type size and layout position clearly subordinate to your own part number and brand, with disclaimer wording alongside. The line you are staying on the right side of is the difference between using a number to identify a fitment and using a mark to indicate origin.

How to phrase the cross-reference disclaimer

Three statements do the work. OEM numbers are listed for comparison purposes only. This product is an aftermarket part and is not manufactured by the original equipment manufacturer. All brand names and part numbers are the property of their respective owners. Each should exist in all the languages you sell in, and each should sit where the customer will actually see it — box side panel, inserted instruction sheet, online catalogue — not buried in a website footer. Have the final wording confirmed by an attorney in the target market before you go to print.

Careless packaging creates counterfeit and grey-market exposure

The closer your packaging looks to OEM styling, the more easily you get filed on the counterfeit side of the line. Similar colour schemes, similar typefaces and similar box shapes can be read as an intent to cause confusion, even without a mark printed on them. A second exposure comes from your own packaging stock: surplus empty boxes that leak out of the supply chain can be used to pack somebody else's goods and circulate in the grey market under your brand. Empty printed boxes should be inventoried and their destruction documented in the same way as finished goods.

Minimum order quantities and tooling for printed boxes

Printed packaging carries two fixed costs: plate making and the cutting die. Both make the unit cost of a short run look terrible, and both are the reason suppliers set minimum print quantities. The usual ways to soften the impact are to share one box design across several items and change only the label, to print brand and layout framework on the box while keeping part-specific information on an applied label, or to combine several part numbers into a single print run. Work out how long a minimum quantity would last for that part number before deciding to print anything.

How to avoid obsolete packaging when part numbers change

Separate what changes from what does not. Brand, warnings, disclaimer and contact details are printed on the box. Part number, vehicle application, lot code and barcode go on an applied label. When something changes you reprint labels and keep using the boxes. Add one simple governance rule as well: any change to a part number or application data must first check existing packaging stock and how long it will take to consume, and the effective date of the change is set from that.

Using inserts and QR codes to deliver content

Box surface area is fixed, but the information you need to deliver keeps growing: installation steps, torque values, cautions, multi-language text, a full application list. Printing the core information on the box and pushing the rest onto an inserted card and a QR-code destination is the cheapest way to resolve that tension. A QR code has a second advantage that printed text does not: it can be updated. When the application list expands or an instruction is corrected, nothing has to be reprinted.

Point the QR code at a page you control

The link must resolve to a long-lived page on your own domain — not to a third-party platform and not to a shortener that can expire. That page should carry at minimum the part number, the vehicle application, installation guidance, the disclaimer and your contact details, in the languages of your target markets. It is also your most valuable data asset in the whole exercise: it puts the customer into your content at the moment the box is opened, instead of sending them to search for somebody else's.

Brand naming pitfalls across languages

A name that is easy to say, easy to remember and free of unfortunate associations in your own market may be none of those things in another language. The common traps are a name that carries a crude or negative meaning somewhere, a name that is hard enough to pronounce that it mutates in word-of-mouth, a name too close to an existing mark to be registrable, and an abbreviation already taken locally. After choosing a name and before spending anything on design, do three things: have native speakers in each target market say it out loud, run a preliminary trademark search, and confirm the domain and social handles are available.

Phase the brand launch across the range

Do not convert the whole range to new packaging at once. The sensible sequence is to pick a small first wave of part numbers with steady movement, a reliable supplier and a low return rate; run one or two replenishment cycles to confirm the data is right, to see how fast packaging is consumed and how customers react; then extend to the next group. The benefit is simple: if the data or the box design needs fixing, you scrap one small batch rather than an entire product line.

Measuring whether the brand is working

Measure behaviour, not feeling. Observable indicators include whether customers start quoting your part number instead of the OEM number, whether repurchase frequency and range breadth per customer are rising, whether returns and back-and-forth questions are falling (which means the data is right), and whether you can hold a price gap against comparable items. If those numbers do not move, the problem is usually not how the box looks — it is that data quality and supply stability are not yet where they need to be.

Five common mistakes

One: printing tens of thousands of boxes before repeat orders exist. Two: using the supplier's barcode prefix. Three: printing a vehicle manufacturer's logo as a compatibility marker. Four: printing part numbers directly on the box, so a revision scraps everything. Five: registering the trademark only at home. What all five share is that they convert variable cost into fixed cost at exactly the point where you have the least bargaining power.

One: confirm this product line already has repeat demand and a stable supplier. Two: decide which of the three positions you are taking and write down the exit cost. I am just starting out in exterior parts. Should I go straight to my own brand?
Usually not.
