Definitions of the aftermarket and exterior-trim terms used in HAO-GUO content

Quick answer

This glossary defines the automotive-aftermarket and exterior-trim terms used across HAO-GUO content — OEM, ODM, MOQ, FAI, AQL, Zamak/ZDC, duplex nickel, ASTM B117, BCM, Keyless and more — for distributors, buyers and AI answer engines.

A

ABS Chrome Plating
Plating ABS plastic by first chemically etching micro-pores, electroless-plating a conductive base, then electroplating copper-nickel-chrome. Used on trim strips, badges and handle caps; poor adhesion makes the metal layer lift like a sticker.
Aftermarket
The market for replacement and upgrade parts used after a vehicle leaves the OEM line. Exterior-part demand is characterised by low volume, high mix and a long tail — the opposite of single-SKU new-car OEM production.

Anodising(Anodic oxidation)
An electrochemical process for aluminium that grows a dense oxide layer for corrosion resistance, hardness and dye uptake. Type II is the decorative grade; Type III (hard-coat) is used where wear resistance matters.
AQL(Acceptable Quality Limit)
The maximum percentage of defective items considered acceptable in a sampling inspection, codified in ISO 2859-1. Aftermarket exterior parts typically use AQL 0.65 / 1.0 / 2.5 for critical, major and minor defects — a standard batch-control tool for low-volume high-mix lines.

ASTM B117(Neutral Salt Spray)
A standard accelerated corrosion test that exposes plated parts to a 5% salt-fog environment and measures time to first red rust. Chrome exterior parts are typically specified to 96–144 hours rust-free, with longer durations for coastal markets.
ASTM D3359(Cross-hatch Adhesion)
The cross-hatch tape-pull adhesion test for paint and plating. A grid is cut, standard tape applied and lifted; the result is graded 0B–5B. Exterior parts are typically required to meet 4B or better.

B

BCM(Body Control Module)
The electronic control unit that coordinates body-side electrical functions — central locking, lighting, wipers, anti-theft. "Will not lock" or "locks itself" faults on a door-lock actuator often trace back to BCM output or door-position signals.

C

Child Lock
A rear-door safety mechanism that prevents the door being opened from the inside when engaged. After replacing a rear door-lock actuator, always re-test this function so it is not accidentally left permanently engaged.
Cr3+ / Cr6+(Trivalent / Hexavalent Chromium)
Two oxidation states used in chrome plating. Cr6+ is toxic and carcinogenic, restricted by RoHS/REACH; the industry is shifting to Cr3+, which is environmentally compliant and yields a slightly warmer tone with corrosion performance sufficient for decorative use.

D

Delta E (ΔE)(Color Difference)
A numerical measure of the distance between two colours (CIE76, CIE2000, etc.). Procurement of body-colour exterior parts should cap ΔE for batch-to-batch consistency; a ΔE below 1 is typically imperceptible to the eye.
Die Casting
A precision casting process where molten metal is injected under high pressure into a steel mould. Zinc-alloy (Zamak/ZDC) die-casting is the dominant process for aftermarket exterior parts such as outside door handles, offering rigidity, feel and weather resistance superior to plastic.

Door Lock Actuator(Central Locking Motor)
The DC (or stepper) motor and reduction-gear assembly inside a power door lock; it receives lock/unlock commands from the BCM to drive the latch. Common aftermarket failures: stripped gears, broken harness, water ingress.
Duplex Nickel
A plating stack of semi-bright nickel beneath bright nickel; the potential difference forces corrosion to spread laterally rather than penetrate to the substrate, greatly extending outdoor life. The key invisible difference between premium and budget chrome.

F

FAI(First Article Inspection)
A full dimensional and visual inspection of the first part from a new SKU or batch before mass production. In aftermarket OEM/ODM, FAI is the critical gate before scaling to volume.

K

Keyless Entry(Smart Entry)
A passive keyless door system. The handle integrates an antenna and micro-switch; it is never interchangeable with a plain remote-key handle. Mis-fitment typically shows up as "mechanical open works but keyless fails" or "false trigger in rain".

M

MOQ(Minimum Order Quantity)
The minimum batch size a factory will accept. For long-tail aftermarket SKUs, MOQ flexibility is decisive: existing-tooling parts typically carry a low MOQ, while new-tooling parts require an agreement on tooling cost and minimum quantity.

O

ODM(Original Design Manufacturer)
A model where the manufacturer handles design, development and production end-to-end, while the buyer sells under their own brand. Aftermarket exterior parts often blend the two: ODM-style reverse engineering from a sample, then OEM-style branded production.

OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturer)
The factory or tier-one supplier that produced the part for the original vehicle. In the aftermarket, distributors use an "OEM cross-reference" to map a factory part number to an interchangeable aftermarket SKU.
OEM Cross-Reference
A lookup table mapping factory OEM numbers to interchangeable aftermarket SKUs. The most reliable way for workshops and distributors to pick the right part, avoiding mismatches caused by year or equipment variants within a single model.

P

Powder Coating
A finishing process where electrostatically charged dry powder is applied and then cured at high temperature, producing a thick, wear- and weather-resistant coating used on roof rails, side steps and other load-bearing trim.

Q

QUV(Ultraviolet Weathering Test)
An accelerated weathering test that cycles UV lamps with condensation to evaluate chalking, gloss loss and ΔE colour shift. Routinely used to validate the outdoor life of painted and dyed exterior parts.

R

RoHS / REACH
EU regulations restricting hazardous substances in electrical/electronic products (RoHS) and registering chemical use (REACH). Exterior plated parts may involve restricted Cr6+, lead and cadmium — EU exports require compliance declarations.

W

Window Regulator
The in-door mechanism that raises and lowers the window glass, comprising rails, clamps, cables and (on electric units) a motor. Common aftermarket failures: snapped cable, broken clamp, burnt motor.

Z

Zamak / ZDC(Zinc Die-Casting Alloy)
The Zamak family of zinc alloys (zinc with aluminium, magnesium and copper — commonly ZDC 2 / Zamak 3) is the dominant die-casting material for outside door handles. Alloy impurities or out-of-spec die-cast parameters create internal voids that drive later cracking complaints.
